Feminine Form in Moroccan Darija

In Moroccan Arabic (Darija), many words change depending on whether they are masculine or feminine. Usually, the feminine form is made by adding the sound “-a” (ـة) at the end of the word. This is very similar to how French has un/une or beau/belle.

Masculine (Darija) Feminine (Darija) English French
wald bnt boy / girl garçon / fille
Ostad Ostada teacher (m/f) professeur (m/f)
kbîr kbîra big (m/f) grand / grande
sghîr sghîra small (m/f) petit / petite
jdid jdida new (m/f) nouveau / nouvelle

📖 Examples in Sentences

  • Had Lwald kbîr → This boy is big → Ce garçon est grand
  • Had Lbant kbîra → This girl is big → Cette fille est grande
  • Dar jdida → A new house → Une nouvelle maison
  • Ostada Drayfa → The teacher (f) is nice → La prof est gentille
💡 Tip: Most of the time you just add “-a” to make a word feminine, but some words are unique and must be memorized, like wald → bant (boy → girl).
